Kurt Russell Confirms The Most Fun Marvel Rumor of The Season

Kurt Russell Bone Tomahawk

Kurt Russell has had something of a resurgence this past year that’s reminded audiences that he’s not only a certifiable badass but also a great actor with such awesome screen presence. While his roles may not have been incredibly complex, the amount of sheer enthusiasm and style he brings to each has made his performances gems of their respective movies.

He played suave covert ops professional Mr. Nobody in Furious 7. In Bone Tomahawk his performance as classic western sheriff Franklin Hunt wholly elevated the arguably wonky pseudo horror/western (as did his epic mustache) and, of course, Russell rounded out his strong year with Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight. No description necessary there.

Therefore it’s no surprise why so many fans of Guardians of the Galaxy have been salivating at the prospect of Russell playing Peter Quill’s father in the upcoming Guardians sequel, a rumor that was drummed up last week by The Wrap. This week, that rumor has grown some serious legs. Appearing on MTV’s Happy Sad Confused podcast, Russell confirmed via CinemaBlend that he and director James Gunn have indeed discussed the role.

“I literally got a phone call two days ago about this, I’ve never seen Guardians of the Galaxy so I don’t know anything about it. Many times I’ve heard ‘That’s a really fun movie, a really good movie [with] great characters.’ I don’t know it! So, I didn’t realize that [James Gunn] had written and directed it, but we talked to each other on the phone. And I just had to be honest and say, ‘Thank you for considering me, I have to read [the script], and I have to watch the [first] movie because I can’t bring anything for you [right now]. I’ve got nothing to offer here.’ So, I’m amazed to get asked about this because everybody knows more about it than I do… it’s a little weird.”

Russell says he still has to see the first Guardians for him to continue these discussions but there’s no indication given that he’d be opposed to playing the mystery role of Peter Quill’s father (“so you’re saying there’s a chance…?”). The identity of Quill’s dear old dad is still unknown and while it was rumored last month that it would be the MCU’s version of Mar-Vell, James Gunn quickly debunked it. What’s clear is that Marvel is moving fast to tie down an actor for the role and Kurt Russell would be a perfect fit. He’s tough, he can be a smart-ass, and he’s clever….sounds like Peter Quill’s father.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is still a ways away, not hitting theaters until May 5, 2017. For now we’ll just have to hope Russell gets around to watching Vol. 1 sooner than I can grow an epic mustache like his…which would actually take ages so that should be pretty easy.
