Key & Peele Team with Henry Selick for Stop-Motion 'Wendell & Wild'

Key & Peele & Henry Selick

Say what?! Yes! Crazy but incredible news. Variety is reporting that animation filmmaker Henry Selick, director of Coraline most recently, is teaming up with comedians Jordan Peele and Keegan-Michael Key for a stop-motion animated movie. The project is called Wendell and Wild, described as a comedy about "two scheming demon brothers who must face their arch-nemesis, the demon-dusting nun Sister Helly, and her two acolytes, the goth teens Kat and Raoul." Oh yes, this definitely sounds like it's from the mind of Key & Peele. It's just developing now, but it has Selick attached to direct and co-write with Jordan Peele. I'm a big fan of all three of these people, so it's exciting to see them planning a new project together.

According to the report, the project is "is not set up yet with a buyer, but the entire team is passionate about the direction." That team being Selick, Key & Peele pushing this along. Commenting on his interest in "dark and twisty tales", Selick references: “Charles Addams cartoons, the original 'Twilight Zone' series, Ray Harryhausen's stop-mo monsters, Disney’s Night on Bald Mountain, Charles Laughton's The Night of the Hunter, the original Invasion of the Body Snatchers – these were the things that caught and held my attention as a kid. Used to be what I liked was a small percentage of what was being made. These days, everything is dark, darker, darkest." I'm always up for more from Selick, and its been a while since his last.

For now, we'll have to keep an eye on any development updates. Even Variety points out that Selick has been attached to a handful of additional stop-motion projects (e.g. The Shadow King, A Tale Dark and Grimm, Graveyard Book) that have been put on hold or haven't really started up yet. Hopefully this one takes off.
