Often imitated but never duplicated world of Harry Potter and J.K. Rowling’s imaginings are now a special part of pop culture and the memories of many. It’s been four years since we’ve seen that world on screen and admittedly, we’ve missed it. Thankfully it will make its return to the big screen in just over a year.
Entertainment Weekly has given the masses a first look at the screen adaptation of Rowling’s Harry Potter-spinoff Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. The photos, a mixture of promo shots and scenes from the set, give a small but enticing glimpse into the film based on Rowling’s 2001 novel of the same name. Rowling penned the script herself and Potter-veteran David Yates will be directing. Beasts revolves around the adventures of Newt Scamander, the premier magizoologist of the wizarding world, and takes place in 1920s New York…70 years before the events of Harry Potter.
Front and center in the photos is boyish but wickedly talented Eddie Redmayne who plays our magizoologist Scamander. Also featured is Katherine Waterston as Porpentina Goldstein, Alison Sudol as Queenie Goldstein, and Dan Fogler as Jacob Kowalski. Redmayne seems bang on as Scamander and is seen wand in hand wearing dapper 1920s threads. It’s hard not to imagine he’s bringing some serious verve and charm to the role and will be fun to watch.
The 33-year-old Brit is close to the brink of becoming a household name. With an Oscar under his belt for last year’s The Theory of Everything and plenty of critical plaudits for this year’s The Danish Girl, Redmayne will cross a new threshold with next year’s Beasts. The movie is the first in a planned trilogy from Warner Bros. but it hasn’t been confirmed whether Rowling and Yates will stay on as writer and director for the sequels. Also cast but not on display in the batch of photos are Colin Farrell, Gemma Chan, Samantha Morton, Ezra Miller, Ron Perlman, and Jon Voight. Beasts hits theaters on November 18, 2016.
