A Female Villain is Yet Another Reason Why We’re Excited for Thor: Ragnarok

Thor: Enchantress

Over the past month or so, there have been a slew of cool details revealed for the upcoming Thor: Ragnarok. Taika Waititi, of Flight of the Conchords and What We Do in the Shadows fame, is directing. The Hulk, who originally was believed to make a cameo, will actually have a lead role, joining Thor on some sort of buddy-buddy “cosmic adventure” throughout the film. And lastly, the Norse super-heroine Valkyrie could possibly make an appearance, kicking off her debut into the MCU.

But just when we thought it couldn’t get any cooler, a rumor has popped up about Ragnarok’s villain. Lainey Gossip reports that they’ve heard the studio is “also planning on bringing their first major female villain into their cinematic universe” and “will pursue a big name actress for Mystery Villainess-like Cate Blanchett big.”

While this so far just a rumor, two possible candidates for the villain could be Amora the Enchantress and Hela, Queen of the Dead. If true, Ragnarok will be Marvel’s first movie with a female as the lead villain, breaking up the sausage-fest line of villains within the MCU. In fact, we don’t see many superhero movies in general with a female as the main antagonist. Rebecca Romijn and Jennifer Lawrence both played Mystique in the X-Men franchise as well as January Jones as Emma Frost and Famke Janssen as Phoenix, but they were secondary characters who were more good girls gone sort-of bad. Definitely not of mega villain caliber that can headline a Marvel blockbuster. Whoever this villain is, she’s going to be one bad, bad, woman.

As the rumor suggested, Hela, Queen of the Dead AKA Asgardian Goddess of Death and Amora the Enchantress are both solid possibilities. Hela, in the comics, is Loki’s daughter and has been on a mission to conquer Valhalla since getting bored with her lesser-responsibilities. Amora is a powerful temptress and one of the most skilled magic users in all of Asgard. Cinema Blend threw two other candidates into the hat: Bloodaxe, a vicious killing machine and Karnilla, a sorceress and leader of the independent province of Nornheim. But Cinema Blend also noted that if any of the baddies is worthy of taking over Loki’s villainous duties, it’s Amora.

Thor: Ragnarok is still very far off, with its November 3, 2017 release date nearly two years away. Fans will likely have to wait awhile for more solid developments but for now, this rumor of a major female villain is very exciting and these potential ladies are all very interesting and undeniably bad ass.
