Very high on our list of the best movies we saw at Fantastic Fest this year was Green Room, the sophomore effort of writer/director Jeremy Saulnier, who previously squeezed us with the tense thriller, Blue Ruin. This latest addition to his titularly colorful filmography is yet another thriller that’s like a tense muscle, held completely tight, the only relief coming from the severing of the tendons with a sharp blade.
It’s a somewhat unnerving visual, but that’s exactly what it feels like to watch Green Room. It made yours truly very uncomfortable, as it plays upon one of my greatest fears — that of being slashed with a box cutter. But enough about me, let’s see what Rob Hunter had to say about Green Room:
“Four young and naive members of a punk band run afoul of some reduntantly callous and mean-spirited neo-Nazis in rural Oregon in what might just be their swan song. Writer/director Jeremy Saulnier‘s Blue Ruin is a brilliant slow-burn tracing one inept protagonist’s messy quest for revenge, and for his follow-up quadruples the number of hapless heroes while ramping up the action, energy, and tension to levels that should have been unsustainable. The film is filled with moments that will leave you holding your breath while others have you gasping for air, but it’s also frequently funny. It also features one of the year’s best female ass-kickers brought to glorious life by Imogen Poots. Oh, and fair warning, there are also more than a few deliriously grotesque acts of graphic violence.”
We think this movie is great and we can’t wait for you all to see it. Which will happen eventually, as distributor A24 has announced that Green Room will open in limited release on April 1, 2016 with a nationwide rollout planned for April 15, 2016. They’ve also promised that a trailer is coming soon, so we’ll keep you updated.
