Costume Design Contest Launches for Luc Besson's 'Valerian' Sci-Fi

Luc Besson's Valerian

If you're a budding costume designer/fashion designer just waiting for a chance to get your foot in the door in filmmaking, here's your big shot. A global (sci-fi) costume design contest has just launched online for Luc Besson's upcoming sci-fi project Valerian, which is titled in full: Valerian and The City of A Thousand Planets. This is his very big, very epic return to space opera science fiction, and he needs help designing futuristic costumes for a cocktail party scene in the movie. The contest will end up choosing 20 winners, each receiving $1,000 with the potential to have their work created and worn in the film. Read on for info.

Here's a short video intro from director Luc Besson himself talking about the contest and his new movie:

Aspiring artists, fashion and costume designers from around the world are invited to design a costume for the upcoming film Valerian and The City of A Thousand Planets from visionary writer/director Luc Besson.

Designers are asked to create a piece that could be worn by a human, alien, humanoid or any other intergalactic creature you can think of. The scene for which you are designing will take place at a political cocktail party inside a space station called Alpha and the year is 2580. Designers are encouraged to get inspired by the video to the right and read more about the costume specifications and film below.

Up to 20 costume designers will be selected by Filmmaker Luc Besson, Editor in Chief of Yahoo Style Joe Zee and Valerian Costume Designer Olivier Bériot to receive $1,000 each and potentially have their work created and worn by actors in the film. Submissions are due November 27, 2015.

To enter the contest and read more rules, visit Talenthouse here. They seem to be encouraging designers to go all out, creating completely original and even alien designs. The only specifications are that you must submit a "front, profile and back view of the costume design", it must be designed to be "approximately 2-3 meters (6-10 feet)" tall and "must be a wearable costume (space for the head, two arms and two legs)". I hope we can see all the submissions online before they get sucked up into the production, but I'm sure they'll announce the winners and show off their work eventually. Valerian is gearing up for production now, with a release set for July 2017, and a cast including Cara Delevingne, Clive Owen and Dane DeHaan.

Stay tuned for more updates and more info on Valerian, an upcoming sci-fi project we're following closely.
