The Weinstein Company has released the first trailer for Macbeth, starring Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard. Directed by Australian filmmaker Justin Kurzel, best known for the acclaimed 2011 movie The Snowtown Murders and as the guy who is directing the upcoming Assassin’s Creed movie, this is certainly a different kind of vision for William Shakespeare’s tragedy. It’s got an intense, brooding sensibility and an almost experimental visual language.
Also, if you’ve ever wanted to see Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard, two of today’s finest working actors, play Macbeth and Lady Macbeth respectively, your day has come.
The rest of the cast is also great. Mission: Impossible‘s Sean Harris as Macduff, The Theory of Everything‘s David Thewlis as Duncan, Hot Fuzz‘s Paddy Considine as Banquo. It looks like a bunch of our favorite European actors took a bunch of drugs over a weekend and made an insane Shakespeare adaptation. That’s not how it really happened, but that’s how it happened in my mind.
Either way, it looks like it’s going to be a wicked ride when Macbeth hits theaters later this year.
Here’s the official synopsis:
The story of a fearless warrior and inspiring leader brought low by ambition and desire. A thrilling interpretation of the dramatic realities of the times and a truthful reimagining of what wartime must have really been like for one of Shakespeare’s most famous and compelling characters, a story of all-consuming passion and ambition set in war-torn 11th Century Scotland.
