If this first trailer for The Danish Girl is any indication, it appears as if Eddie Redmayne will be back in the Oscar conversation a year after winning the Best Actor award for his portrayal of Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything. This time around, he’s thrown himself deep into the role of Lili Elbe, a transgender pioneer who live in the early 1900s.
This awards season, particularly as this film begins to make the rounds of the fall festival circuit, should bring a great deal of discussion about transgender representation in film. Director Tom Hooper (The King’s Speech, Les Miserables), in an interview with Screen Daily, admits that “there’s still a long way to go,” but went on to praise Redmayne’s commitment to the role. Despite the fact that casting a cisgender person in the role of Lili would be ultimately controversial, it’s clear that Redmayne worked very hard to be true to the character. And as Hooper explained, he has the right amount of “gender fluidity” about him to pull it off.
While the ultimate quality of the film and Redmayne’s performance remains to be seen, the trailer looks pretty spectacular and emotionally resonant. In part because of Redmayne and in part because of Alicia Vikander, who plays Lili’s wife Gerda. As Angie over at /Film points out, this will be the sixth time we’ve seen Vikander in theaters this year. Though you’ll get no complaints from me, as she’s been a highlight in almost every film in which she’s appeared, particularly Ex Machina and The Man from UNCLE.
The Danish Girl is set to debut later this month at both the Venice Film Festival and the Toronto International Film Festival before it’s release in the United States on November 27.
