Get ready. Something big is coming. In a post on Hollywood Reporter, they've confirmed with IMAX that Lucasfilm's Star Wars: The Force Awakens directed by J.J. Abrams will be playing on every last IMAX screening around the world for one full month straight. They must be anticipating a lot people going to the see this movie non-stop! Indeed, since The Force Awakens looks so damn good this is building up the anticipation even further. It means the theaters and the entire industry is getting ready for Star Wars mania when fans burst through the doors on December 18th - and then camp out there for a full month straight.
In the report, they state that Star Wars: The Force Awakens will open on "375 to 400 screens domestically and more than 400 abroad" but specifics aren't confirmed because even more IMAX screens may open between now and December. Here in the US, the movie – which has at least one major action sequence shot on IMAX cameras (more info on that here) – will play at Regal, AMC and Cinemark and "most museums and other sites with Imax theaters (which have played space-related Hollywood fare including Gravity and Interstellar)." So, everywhere. Which makes total sense because this is Star Wars and it's going to be huge.
Although he declines to discuss specifics, Imax Entertainment CEO Greg Foster expresses his confidence in the film, saying, "Star Wars: Episode VII is the ultimate crossover movie — it crosses over to everyone."
Leading up to the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, the biggest contenders at the box office will be The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2, opening four weeks earlier (in IMAX) but it's going to play very strong. Disney-Pixar's The Good Dinosaur also opens right at Thanksgiving, and then there's Krampus, Ron Howard's In the Heart of the Sea, and then Star Wars the rest of the month. David O. Russell's Joy opens on Christmas Day, along with Concussion, Point Break, Snowden and Daddy's Home. But Star Wars is still going to take up most theaters anyway. We're now only four months away. Just keep holding on and it'll be here before you know it, then you too can camp out at your local IMAX watching on repeat for a month.
