It’s been an interesting last 7 days in the world of superhero movies. Much of the news cycle has been dominated by the doom of Fantastic Four. But as we are wont to do in the movie blogosphere, we’re also looking ahead to whatever Marvel has in store for us next. Mostly to dull the pain inflicted by Fox’s latest attempt at a Fantastic Four movie. But also because some of us simply love the mixing together of rumors and expectations. Something that provides hope for future movies and fills the many holes in our collective hearts. It’s fleeting and potentially damaging (as it tends to cause expectations to fluctuate), but some of us love it, anyway.
This has led us into spoiler territory for Captain America: Civil War, mostly thanks to some reporting from the folks at Heroic Hollywood. Before we get started, here’s a spoiler warning from the Captain himself…
1. Spider-Man May Have Multiple Suits in Civil War
The most recent rumor centers on Spider-Man’s wardrobe. According to sources, Peter Parker will begin Civil War with a homemade version of the Spider-Man suit. He will then later be given a gift from Tony Stark in the form of a much snazzier, technologically jazzed-up version of the suit. Some have speculated that it could even be the red and gold Spidey suit from the comics. Think of this in the same vein as Captain America’s outfits evolving throughout the Marvel films to-date. As Peter Parker’s network of buddies grows, his fashion sense could get a few upgrades.
2. The Teams Are Set for Civil War
According to sources, here are the teams for Civil War:
Team Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.):
- War Machine (Don Cheadle)
- Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson)
- Vision (Paul Bettany)
- Spider-Man (Tom Holland)
Team Captain America (Chris Evans):
- Falcon (Anthony Mackie)
- The Winter Soldier, a.k.a Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan)
- Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner)
- Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen)
- Ant-Man (Paul Rudd)
Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman) is expected to be an integral, but neutral player in the battle between superhero registration supporters and freedom fighters. The teams split up a few notable pairs from comics history. Vision and Scarlet Witch have been very friendly over the years, a bond that was on display in Age of Ultron. And Black Widow and Hawkeye are very chummy. These dynamics playing out in Civil War should be interesting, to say the least.
3. Crossbones’ Scars Will Be On Display
While speaking with /Film, Civil War star Frank Grillo talked briefly about the return of Brock Rumlow, better known as Crossbones. It’s not yet known how Crossbones figures into the larger story in Civil War, as he’s still pretty much on Team Hydra, but he does appear and according to Grillo, it’s going to be pretty gruesome. “The scars are not healed,” the actor said, referencing the horrific scaring that resulted from Rumlow being caught in the destruction of the Triskellion in The Winter Soldier. “The scars are terribly bad but the helmet comes off and you get to see that.”
4. There Will Be Civil War Footage at D23
This coming weekend, Disney will be holding its annual D23 conference. According to numerous reports (and simple logic), a sizzle reel for Captain America: Civil War will be displayed during their Marvel panel. We’re sending our own Adam Bellotto to D23 to bring you the latest, so stay tuned for more.
5. Someone Will Die
This is potentially a huge spoiler, but another report is saying that there will be at least one major death in Civil War. It will be that of T’Chaka, the father of Black Panther and ruler of Wakanda, T’Challa. This is rumored to be one of the inciting incidents that brings Black Panther into the fold. Civil War is expected to be a coming out party for Black Panther (played by Chadwick Boseman) before his solo movie debuts in 2018. While this seems like a big spoiler, we can almost expect this to happen early in the movie. And while T’Chaka is a significant character in comics history, his only role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe will likely be as a device to spur T’Challa and Wakanda out of isolation (as was mentioned in Age of Ultron) and into the world.
Until next time, this has been your latest round of spoiler indulgence. Now back to talking about movies that already exist…
