Solo Han Solo Movie Will Be Directed by the Lego Movie Guys

Han Solo

Ahead of whatever Star Wars is gearing up to present at Comic-Con this weekend, two major pieces of fan service have been revealed today. First there was a confirmation from Birth.Movies.Death that Darth Vader will be a character in next year’s Star Wars Anthology: Rogue One. That’s not surprising since the movie is about a mission to steal the plans for the Death Star, and of course Vader is involved in that Empire project under threat.

Second is news that Christopher Miller and Phil Lord will direct the next Star Wars Anthology feature, which will focus on a young Han Solo. According to The Hollywood Reporter’s Heat Vision blog, this is not the same as the Boba Fett origin story that Josh Trank departed, despite claims that Solo would figure into that movie somehow. Maybe he’ll still be a minor part of that after starring in what’s now the reconfigured Star Wars Anthology 2.

Here’s a basic and obvious synopsis for the installment, via StarWars.com:

The story focuses on how young Han Solo became the smuggler, thief, and scoundrel whom Luke Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi first encountered in the cantina at Mos Eisley.

Miller and Lord have played with the character before. In last year’s The Lego Movie, a Lego version of Solo made a cameo along with C-3PO, Chewbacca and Lando Calrissian, all aboard the Millennium Falcon. We can assume Star Wars Anthology 2 will feature all of those except the droid. Reportedly, Miller also worked on the special editions of the original trilogy while interning at Lucasfilm in the 1990s and even got to play a Stormtrooper.

Obviously this announcement has everyone wondering what will happen with the billion other projects that Miller and Lord have their hands in. They’ll remain producers on the Lego Movie franchise and are still possibly writing a ton of other things — including an animated Spider-Man feature, DC’s The Flash solo movie and 23 Jump Street — while prepping for the solo Han Solo thing. At least they don’t have to write their Star Wars installment, as it’s being scripted by Lawrence Kasdan (The Empire Strikes Back) and son Jon Kasdan instead.

They don’t have a whole lot of time before they have to get deep into the Star Wars Galaxy, though, since the second Anthology movie is due in theaters on May 25, 2018.

Here’s an official statement from the duo followed by what Miller tweeted cheekily after the announcement:

“This is the first film we’ve worked on that seems like a good idea to begin with. We promise to take risks, to give the audience a fresh experience, and we pledge ourselves to be faithful stewards of these characters who mean so much to us. This is a dream come true for us. And not the kind of dream where you’re late for work and all your clothes are made of pudding, but the kind of dream where you get to make a film with some of the greatest characters ever, in a film franchise you’ve loved since before you can remember having dreams at all.”
