There Are Greater Forces at Play: Behind the Scenes of True Detective

Following last night’s premiere, which we’ve already covered with this good read, HBO has released a new behind the scenes video from the set of True Detective. With this new look, we get the principal cast — Rachel McAdams, Vince Vaughn, Colin Farrell and Taylor Kitsch — talking about the broken down nature of the season’s locations, the “brilliant” stories and set pieces devised by show creator Nic Pizzolatto and the darkness that looms below the surface.

We’ve been told that this second season isn’t quite as interested in the occult, meaning Satan has less of a role this time around, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that the darkness hasn’t returned for another fight. There were numerous omens of darkness in the season two premiere alone, include the curious placement of a bird’s head mask in the car of the person who murdered the city manager.

It’s safe to say that despite the relatively optimistic final moments of the first season, the light isn’t exactly winning. Not in Louisiana and certainly not in southern California. For this reason, True Detective season two still has my attention. Let’s not be so quick to write it off just because it’s got a different rhythm than season one.

True Detective airs on HBO Sunday nights. It’s also available via HBOGo and HBONow.
