Paramount’s marketing team is doing a great job on Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, especially when it comes to reminding us that things being “impossible” is a major part of this franchise, the word itself even being in the main title.
We’ve been shown intense clips of Tom Cruise hanging on to the outside of a plane and performing an operation underwater for an extended period of time, and we’ve been informed that that’s really Tom Cruise hanging on to the outside of a plane and that’s really Tom Cruise performing underwater for an extended period of time.
And particularly in the above final trailer — an international spot for the sequel — we hear some very literal dialogue about the impossible nature of the aptly named Impossible Missions Force. New ally Ilsa (Rebecca Ferguson) actually says taking down their new enemy is “impossible,” and Benji (Simon Pegg) sarcastically says, “That doesn’t sound impossible,” as if that shouldn’t be the case for all their work.
He also says, “This isn’t going to end well” a few moments after Brandt (Jeremy Renner) similarly says, “This isn’t going very well.” Everyone is really laying on the idea that the latest tasks might be even more impossibler than impossible. It’s “desperate times” for the IMF and may be their “last mission.”
Of course, it’s all going very well from a marketing standpoint and is sure to go very well as a movie, too. We can presume that everything will in fact end well for Cruise’s Ethan Hunt and his team, yet we’re also going to be on the edge of our seats as if that won’t be the case. That is great action moviemaking. I expect.
We’ll find out in little over a month, when Rogue Nation hits theaters on July 31st.
Here’s an official reminder of the plot of this fifth Mission: Impossible installment:
With the IMF disbanded, and Ethan (Tom Cruise) out in the cold, the team now faces off against a network of highly skilled special agents, the Syndicate. These highly trained operatives are hellbent on creating a new world order through an escalating series of terrorist attacks. Ethan gathers his team and joins forces with disavowed British agent Ilsa Faust (Rebecca Ferguson), who may or may not be a member of this rogue nation, as the group faces their most impossible mission yet.
