It was going to happen one day. Someone had to make a film about the Sony Hack. Word from THR is that filmmaker Jehane Noujaim (seen above) of the Oscar-nominated documentary The Square, working with her husband Karim Amer, is already "quietly" developing a documentary that "explores the cyberattack". The Sony Hack was at the top of the news for weeks late last December, with new information being leaked almost every single day for a few weeks. It was crazy to watch unfold, then suddenly everything went silent, right before the VOD release of The Interview on Christmas Day. THR's sources say that "director Noujaim and producer Amer will put forth alternative theories about the hack’s culprit" but that's all else they reveal.
While I'm personally thankful this project isn't a Hollywood adaptation of a Hollywood disaster, and rather just a documentary, I'm very intrigued to see what their angle(s) will be. "The Sony story is an important chapter in this larger issue," Amer told THR. "The analysts and experts we speak to see it as the 9/11 of cyberattacks, and the implications will be felt for years to come." Interesting. The Square is a fantastic documentary that is remarkable because it's a story of the Egyptian Revolution as told from the inside, from the very people driving the revolution. My hope is that they're continuing that kind of deep exploration with this new documentary, but it remains a quiet project that we probably won't hear about. We'll just have to watch and wait for it to show up at a festival at some point. In the meantime, watch The Square on Netflix.
