Disney Planning a Remake of 1992 Hit Musical Comedy 'Sister Act'

Sister Act

Another day, another remake. This time I simply cannot get excited for this, just no way. THR is reporting that Disney is preparing a new version of Sister Act, but of course. Why not mine their entire collection of past live-action films that made a boatload of money and… remake them! All of them! The only good news is that they're hiring writers Kirsten "Kiwi" Smith and Karen McCullah, of the films 10 Things I Hate About You, Legally Blonde, She's the Man, The House Bunny, The Ugly Truth, Crazy Kind of Love, plus Expendabelles coming up. Disney is putting Cinderella producer Allison Shearmur on-board to develop it. Other than that, they're not sure if Whoopi Goldberg, who starred in the original, will even be back or not.

Touchstone Pictures' 1992 film Sister Act starring Whoopi Goldberg was actually a completely original idea pitched by screenwriter Paul Rudnick. His original script underwent numerous revisions and received the pseudonym "Joseph Howard" for credit in the end. The film features musical arrangements by Marc Shaiman, and went on to spawn a sequel, titled Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit, as well as a Tony-winning Broadway musical. So they pretty much already mined this one, yet they're still back for more. THR's report says it's "unclear at this point if Goldberg would return" and no other plot details are known, so who knows if it's going to turn out more like Pitch Perfect or more like something else. We'll keep an eye out for more.
