Whoa. Some impressive casting news for Marvel's Dr. Strange movie in the works. THR is reporting that Oscar winning actress Tilda Swinton is discussions to play the character called The Ancient One, a Tibetan mystic who is a mentor to Dr. Strange, originally a male role in the comics but now a female role in the movie. Director Scott Derrickson (Sinister, Deliver Us from Evil, The Day the Earth Stood Still) is at the helm of this new Marvel introduction, and it seems like he's really pushing for bold choices in the cast. Benedict Cumberbatch is set to play the lead Dr. Strange, and now with Swinton, this is an excellent duo so far. More casting news is likely on the way soon, as shooting us supposed to begin in November. Read on.
Tilda Swinton is one of our favorites because she can play such unique characters. She's been in plenty of films recently: Snowpiercer, The Zero Theorem, The Grand Budapest Hotel as Madame D., Moonrise Kingdom, We Need to Talk About Kevin, Only Lovers Left Alive, and she's in the upcoming Judd Apatow comedy Trainwreck, plus the Coen Brothers' Hail, Caesar!. THR says "the character has been a male, and Marvel Studios initially was searching for a male actor. But the studio rethought the role and has now made it female. If a deal makes, Swinton will play the Ancient One." In the comics, The Ancient One is a Tibetan mystic who helps train the Sorcerer Supreme, in this case Doctor Stephen Vincent Strange. I like the choice.
Marvel's Dr. Strange, with Scott Derrickson directing, is set to go into production later this year with a release aimed for November 4th, 2016 late next year. So far they've only cast Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange and Tilda Swinton as The Ancient One. We also can't forget that screenwriter Jon Spaihts is taking over script development, and that can mean only good things. Doctor Strange follows a once brilliant neurosurgeon forced into retirement after a car accident destroys his once skilled hands. He then meets the Ancient One on a trip to Tibet and learns to become the Sorcerer Supreme. We'll be keeping an eye on this production and any other major developments. In the meantime, go watch any film that Tilda Swinton is in.
