Now we know what Josh Trank walked away from (or was let go from). According to The Wrap, the second standalone Star Wars movie, which Trank had been attached to direct, will follow the origins of Boba Fett, as has long been rumored. We know the first part of the title will, like Rogue One, be Star Wars Anthology. As for the second part, all I can say is I hope it’s not simply Boba Fett Origins. How about this: Star Wars Anthology: Making Boba Fett Cool Again.
Oh yeah, because we already saw Boba Fett’s origins with his very early years shown in the prequels. Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones showed him as a young clone adopted as the son of Jango Fett. But the new movie won’t likely continue his life through his awkward teenage years and further coming of age. The rumors circulated in the past have had the plot take place either between Star Wars and The Empire Strikes Back or Empire and Return of the Jedi.
That makes it sound very much like a backstage story since the character comes into each of those original trilogy installments. Do we care what bounty hunting missions he went on between his attempts to get Han Solo. I’d be more interested in seeing a pre-New Hope story, maybe with him and the young Solo that’s been teased in the last few years or something post-Jedi showing him getting out of the sarlacc and where he goes to after the Empire falls.
With expanded universe no longer canon, the question of what happened to Fett after falling into the sarlacc is open. Otherwise, maybe we’re supposed to just think he’s been eaten and is dead.
We’ll probably hear about a new director for this movie soon. It’s set to hit theaters three years from now, in May 2018.
