Jason Reitman Heads to DreamWorks Animation for 'Beekle' Movie

Jason Reitman / Beekle

One of the next films by Jason Reitman will be animated. Deadline is reporting that Reitman has partnered with DreamWorks Animation based in Burbank, CA to adapt the book The Adventures Of Beekle: The Unimaginery Friend. This will be the first project put into development since DreamWorks Animation went through staff changes last year, with new Co-Presidents of Animation Bonnie Arnold and Mireille Soria running the ship. "I was book shopping with my daughter, when a little tooth-shaped character in a paper crown stole our hearts," Reitman said about the project. "His name was Beekle and I'm honored to now be adapting [author Dan] Santat's charming story into a feature film." Sounds like it will be a charming film.

The book, by Dan Santat, was first published in 2014 and picked up all kinds of awards, including the 2015 Caldecott Medal. Here's a short intro to the character Beekle via the Amazon listing for the children's book:

This magical story begins on an island far away where an imaginary friend is born. He patiently waits his turn to be chosen by a real child, but when he is overlooked time and again, he sets off on an incredible journey to the bustling city, where he finally meets his perfect match and-at long last-is given his special name: Beekle.

From the news on Deadline, DreamWorks Animation's Co-Presidents commented: "Welcoming Jason onto this project is a true coup, as his incredible ability to tell heartfelt character-driven stories with a signature comedic tone makes him the perfect choice to bring this beloved book to the big screen. We immediately fell in love with the concept of Beekle and know that Jason will create something truly special from this fantastic source material." Jason Reitman, coming off of his last film Men, Women & Children and a couple of live read events, will both write and directed the Beekle movie. As a fan and supporter of Reitman throughout his career, I'm looking forward to seeing him jump into animation. We'll keep an eye out for more updates.
