We don’t need a Red Band trailer to know what Rainn Wilson says at the end of this first trailer for Cooties, a horror comedy that we’ve been waiting to see released since its debut at Sundance in 2014. We also don’t need to see what happens next in that scene, presumably the torching of young children for our amusement. It’s okay, because they’re zombie children, basically. The movie is about an elementary school infected by bad chicken nuggets, which have caused all the kids to be rapid, teacher- and parent-eating monsters. The concept, mainly for the title, is brilliant. According to our own Rob Hunter, the movie itself is pretty good, too.
“First-time feature directors Jonathan Milott and Cary Murnion deliver a bright, highly energetic movie that manages to find the sweet spot of films featuring kids and extreme violence,” he wrote over a year ago. “It’s just absurd enough and obviously not based in reality, and besides, some of these kids are little shits who deserve to be impaled with a cock-shaped rooster-shaped trailer hitch.”
Hunter saw Cooties again earlier this month at the Stanley Film Fest, where he noted that some things about the movie have been changed for the better, including the ending, which is now “far more energetic and satisfying.” If you’re okay with seeing child actors take baseballs to the skull and, again, likely burned to death, all within the context of this sort of combination of nightmare and fantasy (the balance depending on how you feel about kids in general), then it sounds like a lot of fun.
In addition to Wilson, the movie stars Elijah Wood, Alison Pill, Jack McBrayer, Nasim Pedrad and Jorge Garcia, as well as the movie’s screenwriters, Leigh Whannell and Ian Brennan.
You can catch Cooties in a theater or on VOD on September 18th.
