Sony Pictures Developing Female Centric '21 Jump Street' Spin-Off?

21 Jump Street

Sony Pictures seems to have a lot of big plans in the works for the future of their franchises. There's a big plan in the works for a whole cinematic universe to follow the all-female Ghostbusters reboot from Paul Feig, with another film having Channing Tatum and Chris Pratt strapping on proton packs. And there's also been chatter about the 21 Jump Street franchise meshing with the world of Men in Black. Now another rumor has surfaced revealing hopes to expand the 21 Jump Street brand even further, and it's not unlike Sony's plan for more Ghostbusters, because there may be a female centric spin-off in the works now.

Tracking Board, who is hit or miss when it comes to rumors, reports that the studio is developing a spin-off that would focus on two female leads going undercover this time. And this isn't just a concept in development, but it sounds like the studio already has writers trying to figure out the script with "Broad City" writers Lucia Aniello and Paul W. Downs on board to make it happen. It's not the most original idea, but I can't say that it sounds like a bad one. After all, why should the boys have all the fun?

It's not as if we haven't seen a small glimpse into the female angle of the Jump Street division since Fifty Shades of Grey star Dakota Johnson and rapper Rye Rye (who also did an update of the original TV show's theme song) played two undercover cops who were seen as brief rivals for Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill in 21 Jump Street (above). We doubt that this new film would bring those two back, though Johnson has much more starpower now, so it wouldn't be out of the question. Honestly though, if we're having "Broad City" writers take a crack at this, then just have series stars Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer take the lead roles. They have the perfect comedy sensibilities to make this work. Thoughts?
