Legend Trailer: Two Tom Hardys Are Better Than Everything

Tom Hardy is about to have another big hit on his hands, and unlike Inception and The Dark Knight Rises, the upcoming Mad Max: Fury Road is a starring vehicle for the actor. Will it make more people pay attention when they should for the smaller stuff like Locke and even when they maybe shouldn’t, like with his latest, the critically rejected Child 44? If so, then they’ll soon enough be spoiled by a twofer. As you see in the teaser trailer above, Hardy plays dual roles, identical twin brothers Ronald and Reginald Kray, in this fall’s British gangster movie Legend.

Written and directed by Oscar-winning L.A. Confidential scribe Brian Helgeland (whose last gig at the helm was 42), Legend follows these notorious real-life organized crime bosses of ’50s and ’60s London. If you loved seeing Hardy as a gangster or hardened criminal in such movies as Bronson and Lawless, you’re sure to doubly love him here as the very dangerous pair. And yet you may even forget that he’s the same person playing both parts, given that he sometimes wears glasses as one of the Krays.

Still, Legend is sure to be all about Hardy’s performance(s), even with a great supporting cast attempting to shine from behind his literally frame-hogging presence. Emily Browning plays Frances Shea, Reggie’s wife of a couple years, who either committed suicide or was murdered, depending on the story (officially it was suicide). Christopher Eccleston is their adversary on the side of the law, Detective “Nipper” Read. Taron Egerton, David Thewlis, Paul Anderson and Tara Fitzgerald also costar.

The Krays have already been the subjects of movies, including of course the 1990 feature The Krays, which starred actual (non-twin) brothers, Spandau Ballet band members Gary and Martin Kemp, in the roles of the gangster siblings. There’s also The Rise of the Krays, out on DVD in the UK next month, and its soon to follow sequel, The Fall of the Krays. And there are a few documentaries, including 2001’s The Krays: The Final Word. Watch a clip of the real Reginald Kray from that one below.
