It’s almost that time of year again, for Woody Allen‘s annual release to hit theaters and either be pretty good or not at all good. It’s almost like a Shrodinger’s cat situation until it arrives and we get the consensus on whether this will be another to shrug off or his latest Oscar darling. Trailers don’t often help in the determination of whether this cat is alive or dead, either. The one that just dropped for Allen’s latest, Irrational Man, looks hit or miss.
At least this time Emma Stone is not the love interest of a man 30 years her senior, like in last year’s Magic in the Moonlight. Instead, her leading man, Joaquin Phoenix, is only 14 years older. But he also seems to be seeing a slightly older woman, played by Parker Posey. By the way, it’s pretty awesome seeing Parker Posey in one of Allen’s movies, even if it does turn out to be one of the weak ones. Phoenix actually seems like a great fit, too.
The plot of Irrational Man involves a big-deal philosophy professor (Phoenix) having an existential crisis. He joins the staff of a small-town college and finds new meaning in his life when he starts dating one of his students (Stone). It actually sounds like a good double-feature with last year’s underrated remake of The Gambler, which had Mark Wahlberg as a writing professor having an existential crisis who hooks up with a student played by Brie Larson.
The apparent comedy (IMDb has it classified as a mystery) also stars If I Stay‘s Jamie Blackley, who seems to get top billing in the trailer in spite of not really being in it much, but that’s just the luck of alphabetical credits.
Irrational Man will premiere at the Cannes Film Festival next month before opening here on July 24, 2015. That’ll be counter-programming against Pixels, I guess.
