Right around the time that Kingsman: The Secret Service was heading to theaters, director Matthew Vaughn was already talking about ideas for the sequel. However, the film had not yet proven to be a box office success. Thankfully, audiences turned out to see the fun spy adventure and just this past weekend, the film crossed $400 million worldwide. And The Wrap reports that was enough for Fox to officially start developing a sequel to the film that starred Colin Firth and newcomer Taron Egerton. However, at this time, it's not clear if Vaughn will be back in the director's chair since he has a lot on his plate for the future.
Vaughn was just recently lined up to direct a new take on Flash Gordon, also set up at 20th Century Fox, and he's also involved with the Olympic biopic Eddie the Eagle, which also stars Taron Egerton, this time teamed up with Hugh Jackman. Years ago, Vaughn was also linked to a superhero retirement home project called Golden Age, and that's reportedly still in play as well. Of course, Vaughn has fallen away from projects before, so it wouldn't be out of the question for him to prioritize a Kingsman sequel over any of these other projects, which would be the first sequel to his own film that he directed.
As for what a sequel to Kingsman might bring, Vaughn previously teased, "Poor Mark Strong will be going on a journey that he never imagined. And we’ve got this idea to introduce the world to the American branch of the Kingsman." He also added, "All of [the Kingsmen] will be doing stuff… And the villain we’ve come up with… We’ve got a really fun idea for the sequel." Surely Taron Egerton will be back as Eggsy, but it remains to be seen if any of the original cast members, besides Mark Strong, would be coming back. A lot of pivotal characters died, so I'm guessing not, but it's the spy genre, so anything is possible. Thoughts?
