Director Matthew Vaughn has been the starter for several franchises, being at the helm of X-Men: First Class and Kick-Ass, but he's yet to stick around beyond a single film. There's a chance that this year's Kingsman: The Secret Service will actually bring Vaughn back for a hopeful sequel to the spy action adventure, but it's early days to guarantee that. And now THR reports 20th Century Fox is looking to Vaughn to relaunch a classic comic strip on the big screen as the director of Flash Gordon . Vuaghn is currently in talks with the studio to bring the sci-fi character created in the 1930s to the big screen again.
Created by Alex Raymond, Flash Gordon is a handsome polo player and graduate of Yale University who finds himself and his friends Dale Arden and the half-mad Dr. Hans Zarkov traveling to the planet Mongo, believed to be the source of where a shower of fiery meteors that hit Earth originated. The trio come to find the meteors were weapons created by the planet's evil ruler, Ming the Merciless. The comic strip character, which influenced George Lucas in his creation of Star Wars, made some changes to the hero to bring him to the big screen in the 80s, which was one of the cheesiest sci-fi adventure movies of its time.
With a director like Vaughn on board, this has the chance to be action-packed, fun and stylish, and hopefully infinitely better than the previous iteration, though it's hard to hate the Queen soundtrack. The script will come from Star Trek 3 scribes J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay with a previous treatment written by George Nolfi, who is also producing the film with John Davis. The last time an iconic, classic sci-fi hero like this was brought to the big screen, it resulted in John Carter. While the film bombed and is considered a failure, it's an underrated flick. Hopefully Vaughn turns in something that's a quality film and a hit.
