Ewan McGregor to Play Lumiere in Disney's 'Beauty and the Beast'

Ewan McGregor / Lumiere

Not too long ago, Ian McKellen was secured to play the butler turned clock named Cogsworth in Disney's forthcoming live-action Beauty and the Beast, starring Emma Watson and Dan Stevens in the title romantic roles. Now Cogsworth's suave counterpart Lumiere has been cast as well with THR reporting Moulin Rouge and Star Wars prequel trilogy star Ewan McGregor has landed the role of the maitre d' who is turned into a candelabra due to the curse put upon the prince and his castle. Fans will know Lumiere well since he leads the iconic musical number "Be Our Guest," featuring a cavalcade of dancing dishes.

As we've previously reported, the rest of the cast includes Luke Evans as the dastardly Gaston, Josh Gad as his sidekick Le Fou, Kevin Kline as Belle's father, Emma Thompson as Mrs. Potts and Audra McDonald as Garderobe. McGregor hasn't gotten musical since his starring turn in Moulin Rogue, so it'll be nice to hear him sing again for Beauty and the Beast, especially if he does it with a French accent, like Lumiere in the animated version of Beauty and the Beast. While I love the casting of McGregor, I can't help but think that Jean Dujardin would have been perfect for this role as well. Anyway, Bill Condon directs the film which will start production next month in London and hits theaters on March 17th, 2017.
