Cub Trailer: This Scouting Trip is No Jamboree

Ghost stories around the campfire are a tradition for Scouts, but if any troop leaders want to really scare the kids, they’ll show them Cub just before bed. There’s sure to be nothing like crawling into your tent in the middle of the woods after seeing a movie in which Belgian Cub Scouts and their guardians are slaughtered by some creature in the middle of the woods. It’s hard to tell from the trailer above, but yes, kids are killed off in this directorial debut by Jonas Govaerts. But it could be helpful to young outdoorsmen to learn never to totally dismiss a boy who cries wolf. They ought to earn a merit badge just for getting through Cub and showing an understanding of its lesson.

In his review of the horror flick at Fantastic Fest last fall, our own Rob Hunter called Cub “a refreshing mix of terror, action and depth.” He continued: “We’ve seen ‘killer in the woods’ movies before, but while Cub uses the basic framework of the subgenre, it layers the story with characters and details that feel fresh and creative in their execution. Those scripted strengths come packaged in one hell of a gorgeous film accompanied by an eclectic and propulsive score that drives the action as it raises the pulse.” Other adjectives of praise in his review include “smart, “exciting,” “brutal” and “thrilling.”

Here’s the official synopsis from Artsploitation, which is releasing Cub on DVD and Blu-ray on August 18th:

This dark, bloody imaginative fairy tale about a camping trip that turns into deadly carnage draws on such influences as Lord of the Rings, Friday the 13th and The Devil’s Backbone. The story follows 12-year-old outcast Sam who, along with his troop of cub scouts and their teenage supervisors, camp in woods rumored to house a mysterious and deadly werewolf. Inquisitive Sam, certain the woods are inhibited by something evil, soon stumbles upon a feral young boy and, eventually, his evil psychopathic mentor. But convincing the others of the danger falls on deaf ears, and soon ingenious traps begin to take their violent toll on the group. A wildly entertaining “killer in the woods” actioner.
