Neill Blomkamp Says 'Alien 5' Won't Bump Heads with 'Prometheus 2'

There was a little bit of an uproar following the announcement of a new film in the Alien franchise from District 9, Elysium and Chappie director Neill Blomkamp. It wasn't because the film was being made necessarily, but moreso because he said this new film would share DNA with Alien and Aliens, and then this new film would come next. That implied that he would basically ignore Alien 3 and Alien Resurrection, for better or worse. But he's since backtracked saying, "I’m not trying to undo Alien 3 or Alien Resurrection," but it will just be more connected to the first two films. But now he's being asked about Prometheus too.

Some are wondering how 20th Century Fox's approval of this project effects the future of Prometheus 2 , which is still supposed to happen, and is being developed concurrently with Alien 5. In short, Blomkamp told Empire (via ComingSoon) that his new film won't "tread on the toes" of a Prometheus sequel, but he did have to make a change for that to be true. The director explained, "I changed the one thing [Scott] felt was bumping Prometheus a little bit. One thing that makes me feel good about it is that Ridley is producing it. He likes the idea of what I want to make.” That's definitely something to be happy about.

And he also reiterates that, "the first two films are the ones that I care about," and also that his film could easily be called "Alien 3 (no, really)" which still implies there might be some retconning that happens when it comes to the first Alien 3. But what will the film really be called? Blomkamp has an idea, but he's not sure it'll fly yet. The director says, "I sent what I wanted as the title to Ridley. It’s kinda quite bold, and he was like, ‘I really like that.’ So I’m gonna test it, I don’t think it’s gonna work, though. I have my own idea but it gives away too much if I say the title. But in the event that it doesn’t work, I’m dead in the water."

That's an interesting little tease, but let's not forget that Sigourney Weaver said that she hopes this gives her character Ripley a "proper finish." So maybe the title has something to do with the finality of this chapter in the franchise. And the good news is that even if this film, potentially built as the end of the sci-fi series, is a hit, Fox won't necessarily have to ruin that with another sequel, because they still have another Prometheus film in the works. Either way, there's a lot riding on this film, and considering how Blomkamp fared with Elysium and Chappie, some fans are certainly worried. But we're hoping for the best. Thoughts?
