Captain America: Civil War has a big secret

Captain America: Civil War

Among the big commercials during the Super Bowl last night was a brand new look at Captain America: Civil War. The 30-second spot, which can be seen in our recap of the best and worst big game trailers, finally showed us the two teams that will go to ‘Civil War.’ It coincided with a big hashtag stunt on Twitter, in which users were able to show their support for either Team Iron Man or Team Cap.

This morning, more news about Civil War dropped via our friends at Geek.com. This particular news isn’t something you’ll see in a trailer, nor is it something the studio is likely to confirm. In fact, it could be a Super Bowl-sized spoiler. Meet me below this fancy spoiler warning for more.

Warning: Spoilers Ahead

According to reporting done by Geek.com’s Meredith Placko and Dave Gonzales, there will be a big death in Captain America: Civil War. This is something we’ve known for quite some time. In previous reports, it was rumored that the Russo brothers have shot multiple death scenes with various characters, saving the actual reveal for the final cut of the film.

In this new report, Marvel might be sticking a little closer to the Civil War comic than initially expected. Instead of killing off one of the ancillary characters, they might take out one of the team leaders:

Although at least one cut exists where Steve Rogers disappears with his Avengers to fight another day, sources close to the production confirm that (as of now) when Captain America: Civil War hits theaters, Crossbones will kill Steve Rogers by the end of the movie.

While many fans online have debated if Cap would follow the same fate as his comic book counterpart, it seems the Russo brothers and team are sticking to the comics. Like in the Fallen Son storyline (which happened to be the original name of this movie) that followed the Civil War crossover event, Crossbones (played in the movies by Frank Grillo) will be the one to do the deed.

What makes this interesting is that it would serve the purpose of being a huge moment for audiences, while also being something that Marvel could pretty easily walk back within the context of the MCU. Should Steve Rogers perish, they have options. Geek.com also cites rumors that Sebastian Stan, who plays Bucky Barnes, has been fit for a Captain America costume. And they lay out a path through which Steve Rogers could be resurrected with the use of one or more infinity stones. By the time we get to Avengers: Infinity War, there may be a fully functioning Infinity Gauntlet. The power of the Infinity Gauntlet is such that its user could snap a finger and make wholesale changes to all of existence.

The other possibility is that Chris Evans is on his way out and will exit the Marvel Cinematic Universe in a hugely emotional finale. His original contract was reported to be for 9 movies as Captain America, but that’s something that could change if the studio wants to go a different direction. Will we see him make it out of Civil War alive? Time will tell, but this particular rumor is an interesting one. The death of Steve Rogers would be an undoubtedly bold move on the part of Marvel, a studio that has played it fast and loose with the death of major characters. For all we know at this point, Rogers is the next Phil Coulson.

Then again, other reports say that the movie goes to some dark places and is playing very well with test audiences.
