HBO just dropped 20 new stills from Game of Thrones season 6 on the Internet, which simultaneously gave Thrones bloggers a heart attack. Upon further inspection, it’s clear that even though it’s nice to see some of our favorite characters back in action in the new season, there isn’t much to learn from these new stills.
That is perhaps the point. With season 6 not debuting until late April, it’s still far too early to begin showing off any significant plot details. Even if we get a new trailer — which is very possible this weekend with HBO debuting Vinyl — don’t expect any major characters to do any major things. Like these photos, it will be probably be a lot of looking at something more interesting off-screen and ominous narration.

Below you will find the 20 new photos, ranked from most interesting to least interesting. We begin our exploration with Bran and the Three-Eyed Raven (newly cast Max von Sydow). Where are they? Is that Castle Black? And is this something that’s real or a vision? My guess would be a vision, considering the fact that the Three-Eyed Raven has a very close, literally physical relationship with the tree we saw at the end of season 4. Once again, Bran looks much older.
Here is a nice uncle-father and son moment, happening around the dead body of Myrcella.
Jaime and Cersei do not appear to be getting along. Or there about to engage in an act that will spawn a million thinkpieces.
Balon Greyjoy, still alive. Winner of the War of Five Kings by default.
Theon and Sansa, somehow alive after their death jump.
This is the “I brought my daughter home, sort of” look of shame.
And some actual shame with Septa Unella and Margaery.
Speaking of characters who are still alive, welcome back Yara Greyjoy.
Hold on, buffering…
Still buffering…
Blind Arya!
Sam and Gilly are on a boat.
The High Sparrow continues his commitment to minimalist fashion.
Tyrion and Varys appear to be greatly concerned. Probably over the overwhelming odds stacked against them in the governance of Meereen.
Missendei appears to be unimpressed in her post-Daenerys existence.
Speaking of The Mother of Dragons, she’s looked worse.
And finally, the Red Priestess Melisandre gives us a knowing glare. Is she eyeing another child to burn (looking at you, Olly)? Or perhaps someone to resur… I’ve said too much.
All will become clear when Game of Thrones returns to HBO on April 24. All photos are courtesy of HBO with credit to set photographers Helen Sloan and Macall B. Polay.
