It’s not quite what you’re expecting.
Set photographers yesterday captured our first glimpse at star Brie Larson‘s look in Marvel’s upcoming Captain Marvel. It’s not the red, blue, and gold that the modern incarnation of the character is best known for, however. Instead, Larson is sporting a leathery blue-and-green outfit, one that calls back to a few classic designs.
Don’t forget the first Kree uniform! Then she upgraded it to the iconic red/yellow/blue!!!! MY HEART ITS HAPPENING #CaptainMarvel pic.twitter.com/zJLq78wnd6

There was a pretty predictable Twitter outcry, one quickly silenced by some canny comics readers. While it’s not a one-to-one match, the costume seen here is aesthetically similar to a Kree outfit Carol Danvers wore in her first years as the Captain.
We already know that the Kree, an alien species of famous Marvel antagonists, are present in Captain Marvel. The idea of Danvers initially receiving a Kree warrior’s uniform gives us a little more to work with regarding the film’s plot. In the comics, Air Force Captain Carol Danvers gets her superpowers from an infusion of Kree DNA. It’s possible that those genes came with a uniform, or that Carol stole the outfit from a defeated Kree soldier. Jude Law is playing Mar-Vell, the original Captain who passes his mantle to Carol; is it possible that this is his Kree gear?
One way or another, there’s no way Marvel passes up the opportunity to give audiences a comics-accurate costume. For years, the studio has religiously adhered to comic book design. Their Spider-Man has eyes that change shape; their Star-Lord wears a goofy helmet. While Fox’s X-Men have shied from spandex and DC’s Superman has abandoned his red undies, Marvel has never hesitated to embrace their roots. All that aside, there’s a concrete reason we’re sure we’ll be seeing that costume. Marvel concept artist Andy Park already tweeted out a look at it back in August.
