A big showing for Frances McDormand, Sam Rockwell, Woody Harrelson and the cast of ‘Three Billboards.’
One of the three major bellwethers for the Oscars, the Screen Actors Guild, have announced their nominations for the year of 2017. The big winner in terms of films was Fox Searchlight’s Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. The film scored the most nominations out of any films nominated with four. It must be delightful for Fox Searchlight to have its fate turn around in one week after Shape Of Water also did well at the Critics Choice Awards and Golden Globes. The two other big players in the film category featured Greta Gerwig’s Lady Bird and Jordan Peele’s Get Out. Lady Bird scored nominations for the two central performances from Laurie Metcalf and Saoirse Ronan, as well as, acknowledging the cast of the feature. Get Out received two nominations including one for lead actor Daniel Kaluuya. Mudbound and The Big Sick round out the nominees for Best Cast in a Motion Picture. Perhaps the biggest upsets were Shape of Water and The Post missing best ensemble. Actually, The Post missed completely by not getting nominations for stars Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep.
In television, Big Little Lies continues to get praise for the acting performances of basically the entire cast. Laura Dern, Resse Witherspoon, Alexander Skarsgard, and Nicole Kidman all received notices for their performances on the show. One of the big surprises in Television was the acknowledgment of Netflix’s GLOW. Alison Brie and Marc Maron both got nominated for their performances and the show got nominated for Best Ensemble in a Comedy Series.
This is a big year for the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) awards. The show will have a host for the first time with The Good Place‘s Kristen Bell. The winners will be announced on January 21st on TBS and TNT at 8 p.m.
