Are You Not Entertained? The Colors of Ridley Scott

By Jacob Oller

All the money in the world couldn’t buy you tips like this.

Director Ridley Scott goes big or goes home when he constructs his wild epics. That goes for every aspect of his filmmaking – cinematography, controversial casting, scope, etc – including his color palette selection.

StudioBinder’s video essay notes some of the techniques behind this color usage, explaining the psychological impacts of these selections. The dirty tans and greens of Black Hawk Down and the bright reds and oranges of The Martian isolate the viewer in total color immersion. There’s nothing but the color to turn to and thus we feel trapped.

This insight and more, figuring the out the difference between his world-building monochromatics and more conflict-oriented discordant schemes, makes the hit-and-miss filmmaker one to watch if only for his visual splendor. We don’t have to talk about Exodus: Gods and Kings.
