Vietnamese short finds lush romance in its quiet simplicity.
Writer/director Hoàng Thành Đồng’s Journey of Love is an idealistic love story with a soundtrack as bouncy and bright-eyed as its protagonists. And somehow it works.
Perhaps it’s the Vietnamese language separating an English speaker’s ears from dialogue that might sound cheesy coming from a familiar place, but my money’s on the visuals. You can forgive almost anything and buy into whole worlds if your eyes are seduced. Hoàng Thành Đồng finds jungles in snippets and ecosystems in backgrounds, tantalizing the senses with that surrounding a traditional love story.
