With Robert Bresson, less is always more.
The French director Robert Bresson was known for his sparse filmmaking, with a minimalist style emphasizing the audience’s gap-filling ability. The trust he had in his audience to draw the logical and aesthetic lines between his cinematic implications made his films great and their fans complicit in their greatness.
In order to understand a great director’s films, you have to get into their headspace. For Bresson’s films, they only work if he gets into your headspace. This intermingling of visions through narrative and visual necessity makes his every film one of collaboration with his viewers.
Essayist Julian Palmer created an appreciative video about Bresson’s unique style, analyzing many of his key scenes to understand his approach to filmmaking.
