The Lights and Shadows of ‘Blade Runner’

By Jacob Oller

Humanity’s relationship to visibility is explored in a new video.

Blade Runner and its source story place huge importance on the perception of what is real and what is fake. Some of this perception, when the story took on a visual element, was transferred to the lighting of scenes and characters.

Replicants lay in shadow, the world fell into an endless foggy haze, and the interiors and noodle shops of the world provided the only well-lit solace.

Isabella Cuevas Pierson created a dreamy video essay analyzing the implications of the connection between humanity and brightness. It’s an engaging take on a movie that’s been analyzed to death, especially since these same critical techniques can be used on the film’s new sequel.
