The season’s main focus seems distilled to focus on the series’ power couple and their quest to find their son.

Gearing up for the release of The X-Files‘ eleventh season, the show’s stars Gillian Anderson, David Duchovny, Mitch Pileggi and show creator Chris Carter revealed some chilling new footage at New York Comic-Con over the weekend. Fox Mulder and Dana Scully are back, looking angstier than ever and fighting some of their deepest, darkest demons.

Throughout all the years of The X-Files‘ life cycle, the true constant of the show has been Mulder and Scully’s relationship. Vast myth arcs aside, Anderson and Duchovny’s onscreen chemistry and dynamic have been the glue for Fox’s household sci-fi property. Carter seems primed to continue that legacy: “They get kissin’ close,” he <a href="http://ift.tt/2y9c1vN">told the panel</a> at NYCC. Is he finally retracting that <a href="http://ift.tt/2xtIiJT">“they’re platonic” bs</a> from two years ago? Seems like it, and about time too. But of course, The X-Files is still a show about aliens and supernatural activity, and Season 11 wouldn’t be complete without a big existential problem: “I’m asking you to betray the whole human race,” says the Cigarette Smoking Man in the new trailer for Season 11 of The X-Files. This seems inexplicably linked to Mulder and Scully’s son, William, who Scully had to give up in the show’s ninth season. William is “special”, supernaturally imbued due to part-alien heritage, and seems to have something to do with the potential fall of humanity. To top all that off, the trailer gives us a taste of just the kind of creepy monsters the new season will tackle too, and they look genuinely unnerving. Reducing 10 seasons of a show with as many narrative arcs and threads as The X-Files into a single post when the trailer for the show’s new season is equally elusive is no easy feat. However, if Deadline’s report from NYCC is anything to go by, fans already adore what they’ve seen. The panel promised backstory for the infamous Cigarette Smoking Man — a mainstay Big Bad in the show — and a look at FBI Assistant Director Walter Skinner as a young man. There is also a glimpse of Barbara Hersey in the trailer, although apart from <a href="http://ift.tt/2fFvBbC">knowing her name</a>, the role of Erika Price still remains a mystery. And maybe if this were any other show, it would be a little weird for Carter to reveal a confirmed cliffhanger at the end of the series, but that’s common X-Files territory. Let the unresolvable emotional investment begin. The X-Files is set to return to Fox in 2018.
