One of the downsides of being a lifelong science fiction fan has always been dealing with a scarcity of quality content. Growing up, sci-fi novels, comics, and video games were never in short supply but movies and TV shows were a whole other story. Science fiction isn’t a genre that lends itself to television budgets and few live-action spectacles are as tragic as low-cost sci-fi. For most of my life, being a diligent sci-fi fan meant keeping an ear to the ground for any new program with even a hint of promise. It’s hard to believe how much times have changed.
Today, not one, but two sci-fi time travels series crept up on me like The Babadook. The first, is Lifeline, a slick-looking new TV series running on YouTube Red that boasts Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as one of its producers. Even though Lifeline looks stylish and exciting and features a cool Minority Report-ish premise, it’s not the series that grabbed my attention. The show I’m excited about is Future Man, an upcoming Hulu Original.
Future Man riffs on Nick Castle’s 1984 film, The Last Starfighter, which is about a young man who is so good at arcade games that he’s recruited into an intergalactic battle. Future Man features Josh Hutcherson (The Hunger Games) as a video game playing slacker who finds himself thrust into the role of humanity’s savior. The trailer also features Keith David (The Thing) and Eliza Coupe (Happy Endings) which is all I the convincing I need. Take a look.
