Horror isn’t always dark.
Dario Argento‘s giallo classic Suspiria is a bloody coloring book that drenches the audience in saturated colors and over-the-top emotion. In keeping with Italian giallo tradition, Argento makes everything larger than life. The blood, the sets, the sounds – everything has the exaggerated proportions of a dream.
Nightmares and the uncanny are often interlinked, drawing fear from the too-familiar or the just-off. Suspiria supplements that feeling with buckets of technicolor madness.
Essayist Matt Draper’s new video highlights some of Argento’s most telling techniques that created such a lasting and influential film.
