Short of the Week: ‘Nobody Dies in Longyearbyen’ Finds Herzogian Wonder

By Jacob Oller

A frozen adventure of life and death.

Nobody Dies in Longyearbyen is a brief documentary from David Freid and MEL Films. Exploring the northernmost city in the world, Longyearbyen, film film investigates the rumors surrounding such a mystical designation.

Life and death are surrounded by natural beauty, a combination absurdly and delicately included in many of Werner Herzog’s films. Here, the macabre machinations of science collide with an inscrutable emotional draw to the polar regions of our world. Extremes are sexy and dangerous, as is science. This doc provides the proof that wonder is all around us, as much with agricultural storage as with polar bears.
