Short Film Friday: Odd, Inky ‘Dark Mixer’

By Jacob Oller

Ethereal abstraction makes for riveting animation.

Animated short films are some of the most exciting and form-pushing entries into the medium and Dark Mixer is no exception. Hirotoshi Iwasaki’s animation, which won the Grand Prix for non-narrative at the 2015 Holland Animation Film Festival, elicits the uncomfortably organic sound design and animation style of Don Hertzfeldt’s stick figures.

Iwasaki’s ink oscillates like an evil lava lamp that might actually be alive and its progression into more and more disturbing images create an impressive sense of dread in a film that is basically just some pencil drawings on a blank background.
