“You’re allowed to be happy, but not in front of me.”
Fans of Curb Your Enthusiasm have waited longer than most for a continuation of the beloved series. Thankfully, this week HBO has finally delivered the first full-length trailer promoting the show’s ninth season. Larry David‘s foul mouthed, entitled fictionalized alter ego is back and seemingly, “nothing has changed.”
Three weeks ago, a very different teaser dropped, entitled “Larry David is the Hero We Need.” Set in the vein of our favorite hyper-gritty superhero fare, including a requisite ultra dramatic soundtrack and grave voice-over, the teaser purports:
“There is only one hero who never stays silent.”
Yet, even as the Bat — well, Larry David — Signal glows brightly in the sky, a comfortable David sits in his bed and simply can’t be bothered. It’s just like Curb to poke fun at its years-long hiatus and feed into its own cyclically meta approach to comedy. Sure, David’s coming back but only when he’s good and ready. Even then, he kind of drags his feet.
Between toilet humor and a glimpse at Bryan Cranston‘s guest spot (the likes of Nick Offerman, Elizabeth Banks, and Lauren Graham are also set to make appearances), Season 9 appears primed to combat joy and empathy at a base level. But the trailer is also adamant to point out David’s insufferable nature, providing an amount of self-awareness that may or may not go over well in a media landscape that is increasingly alert to offensive material. Nevertheless, audiences should still buckle up for something deadpan and ludicrous, something existing fans can be inordinately enthusiastic for (pun entirely intended).
Curb Season 9 is scheduled to premiere October 1 on HBO.
