Edgar Wright’s best are deliciously soundtracked.
When I featured Adam Tinius’ Pulp Fiction soundtrack essay, I noted that Shaun of the Dead has some of my all-time favorite needledrops and cheekily-named song selections. Turns out, Tinius has created the same kind of rapidfire sonic punchline collage with director Edgar Wright’s entire Cornetto Trilogy.
This set, including the aforementioned Shaun alongside Hot Fuzz and The World’s End, gave me some big belly laughs in between head-bobbing to premium house and Brit rock. One of the kings of musical implementation in cinema, Wright’s latest Baby Driver was basically a choreography and editing showcase of this exact art.
Flipping through his collective influences, puns, and soundtrack gags is as illuminating and entertaining as listening to a director’s commentary.
