The early Wonder Woman buzz is hot and today’s Opening Credits has a little surprise for subscribers.
Here’s a dirty little secret about film critics and their relationship to the DCEU — aka The Detective Comics Expanded Universe (of Cinema): we all want these movies to be good. And for several years, there has been a wide range of reactions to the universe being built by a creative team led by Zack Snyder, producers Charles Roven and Deb Snyder, and writer David S. Goyer. It’s all created this backlash-to-the-backlash with the DCEU’s most fervent admirers. Accusations of hidden agendas (and hidden paychecks from Marvel) have been flung onto the pages of the Internet at a pace only rivaled by the political discourse in America. But there’s no doubt that many of us — and I say this as a critic, a fan, and a friend to many other professionals in the industry — would rather be delighted by these films and sing their praises. No one wades into the muck with the most rabid fanbases for the sport of it. Okay, maybe some do, but for most of us, it’s just not worth it.
What we’d like to be able to deliver are reactions like the ones you can read below. These are the first reactions about DC’s new adventure, the Patty Jenkins-helmed Wonder Woman film. I’ve collected them from some of our close friends around the industry, the kinds of haters you’ve seen grace the bylines of this very site, guest on our podcasts, and show up in our drunken Sundance party photos. These are people we trust. And their words on Wonder Woman give us a great deal of increased hope about what we’re to expect when we (well, at least I) get to see the film. Personally, I’m looking forward to seeing it on opening night with an electric crowd, preferably with a little buzz on. For now, these are the first words on
For now, these are the first words on Gal Gadot’s solo jaunt through high superheroics. They won’t be the last — and there will undoubtedly be naysayers — but that’s not important. What matters is that you find people you trust, then see the thing for yourself and make up your own mind. These are people we trust…
2. Gal Godot is absolutely phenomenal as #WonderWoman. She KILLS it, just surprisingly good. A truly heroic light DCEU desperately needs.

WONDER WOMAN: Easily my favorite DCEU film. Has the humor and heart the franchise so desperately needs. Gadot and Pine are charming as hell.

The embargo has officially lifted, so here it goes: WONDER WOMAN is, against all odds, pretty damn wondrous.

Loved WONDER WOMAN. She reminds me of Christopher Reeve's Superman: true north superhero w/ no angst or cynicism, which is needed right now.
