The nominees for the 23rd Screen Actors Guild Awards have been announced today, putting awards season in full swing before along with the Global Globe nominations earlier this week. The Screen Actors Guild Awards are unique in that it's the actors themselves choose the best performances from amongst their peers. Last year's big winners were Leonardo DiCaprio for The Revenant and Brie Larson for Room. This year they've selected a very impressive set of notable films - including Moonlight, Hidden Figures, Fences, Manchester by the Sea, La La Land, plus a nice surprise appearance by Captain Fantastic in two categories.

And there you have it. The SAG Awards winners will be announced on Sunday, January 29th early next year, airing on TNT and TBS at 8pm ET/5pm PT. One of the biggest surprises is the nomination for Emily Blunt in The Girl on the Train (did anyone even see it?). Surprising because it means Jessica Chastain from Miss Sloane, Isabelle Huppert from Elle, and Ruth Negga from Loving are missing, and those are three of the best performances this year. I'm also very happy to see Captain Fantastic with a Best Ensemble nom, mostly because I absolutely love that film and the more attention it gets, the better. It's also worth pointing out how fantastic Mahershala Ali is in almost everything he does, and I'm glad to see him nominated as well.
