It might be more a more ironic cross-promotion, but in its defense, Independence Day: Resurgence is probably a movie about saving the Earth. Their latest trailer, released today, came with an email from the studio touting “Just in time for Earth Day!” That’s worth a good giggle.
In addition to releasing the action-packed trailer you can watch below, Fox has also launched a promotion with the Google Play store. For a limited time, the original Independence Day will be available for $0.99, with all of Fox’s net proceeds being donated to the Earth Day Network. The promotion came with a new video from Earth Space Defense Director David Levinson:
The trailer itself is a cornucopia of destruction porn, as one might expect from director Roland Emmerich. It shows off some of the massive digital set pieces in the long-gestating sequel, plus gives us some insight into who these characters are: Jessie Usher as the son of Will Smith’s original character, Maika Monroe as the daughter of Bill Pullman’s character, and Liam Hemsworth as the handsome sidekick to Jeff Goldblum’s eccentric scientist.
