New Game of Thrones Clip Answers Questions, Raises More

davos-and-jon

Last night on Conan, Liam Cunningham took to answering questions about all the wonderful secrets he has been told by author George R.R. Martin. The actor, who plays Ser Davos on Game of Thrones, explained HBO’s security plan (a sniper in the audience) and teased that he has known, for a few years, a big secret about Thrones.

That’s all part of the continued trolling from HBO and the Thrones production. Whether or not Liam Cunningham knows any big secrets about Martin’s big finish is irrelevant. No one is spilling those beans. Not with the sixth season of the show about to hit the airwaves and all the buzz reaching a nice crescendo, anyway.

What Cunningham did provide was a look at a clip from the upcoming season and a few answers to the questions many had following that first season 6 trailer. The scene begins at about the 1:48 mark in the video below:

This scene brings two moments from the trailer together to provide greater context. The first part shows Ser Davos and a few Night’s Watch men — Jon’s friends — huddled around his dead body alongside his direwolf Ghost. From the trailer, it was difficult to discern what Davos is talking about when he says “Apologies for what you’re about to see.” Was he drawing Jon’s sword Longclaw prior to attacking the men in the room, or was there a greater threat? The other shot was of Ser Alliser Thorne and members of the mutiny murder party trying to break down a door within Castle Black.

This scene shows us that the two events are happening on either side of the same door. It’s clear now that Ser Alliser — along with that little turd Ollie — is trying to get into that room and claim Jon’s body, most likely to burn. After all, the Night’s Watch doesn’t want anyone coming back to life as a Wight.

While this answers a few questions, it raises a big one: why is Ser Davos so intent on keeping Jon’s body unburnt? Shouldn’t he too want to burn the body on a pyre and ensure that there isn’t a violent, dead-eyed corpse walking around Castle Black? Is Davos not a man who fights for the living? These are questions that will have to plague us for a few more weeks.

That is, unless you want to jump past this spoiler warning and talk this out.

got-spoilers

There’s more to this situation, as you might already imagine. Perhaps this has something to do with a scene Thrones fans witnessed at the Game of Thrones “Hall of Faces” exhibition during SXSW in Austin. In a clip exclusive to the exhibit, shown as part of a 3D holographic rendition of Melisandre’s flames, we see the Red Woman telling Davos that in her vision, she saw “him” fighting a great battle at Winterfell. She could have been talking about Stannis, her recently fallen chosen one. But it’s hard not to believe that she’s got Snow on the brain.

An excerpt from George R.R. Martin’s A Dance with Dragons is one of our favorite hints:

I pray for a glimpse of Azor Ahai, and R’ hllor shows me only Snow.

The puzzle pieces fit perfectly. For book readers, this has long been one of the most enduring signs that Jon Snow’s death is not one that will stick. On top of that, season 6 will show us The Tower of Joy in a flashback, long believed to be the birthplace of Jon Snow to parents Rhaegar Targaryen and Lyanna Stark.

Assuming Melisandre’s speech to Davos happens before the scene in this new clip, and assuming she is, in fact, talking about Jon Snow’s appearance in her vision, it all fits. Davos, Jon’s friends, and Ghost are all protecting his body so that he can be preserved for whatever Melisandre has in story for him.

A more fun spoiler question: where is Melisandre?
