More superhero movie news out of CinemaCon in Las Vegas this evening: the upcoming reboot of the Spider-Man franchise, the first in a new era of partnership between Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios, finally has its name. The Tom Holland led film will be called Spider-Man: Homecoming.

The title could have the workings of multiple entendre. There is the “homecoming” element of Spider-Man returning home to Marvel’s Avengers-led cinematic universe. It could have something to do with a literal high school homecoming, as this Spider-Man will be much younger and still in high school. It could have something to do with a narrative device, a villain or just a theme of coming back to Queens to defend its denizens. What it means is something we’ll discover as the movie is cast and marketing materials are released.
All of this vibes with the rumors that the new Spider-Man film will have a bit of a John Hughes feel to it and lean into the younger vision of Peter Parker. Our friends at /Film have more info on what it could mean with regard to the Spider-Man comics stories:
“‘Homecoming’ could refer to Amazing Spider-Man #252. Published in 1984, that comic book storyline features the black suit that will become known as Venom, as well as appearances from Avengers like Captain America, Iron Man, and Thor. If the new Spider-Man movie is indeed based on that arc, it could explain rumors that Captain America and Iron Man will be swinging by Spidey’s solo movie. And for what it’s worth, Marvel’s Kevin Feige has confirmed that the Sony-Marvel deal allows not just Spider-Man (whose rights are held by Sony) to appear in Marvel movies, but also for Marvel characters to appear in Spider-Man movies.
Then again, director Jon Watts and his team aren’t obligated to stay faithful to the original comics, or even follow them at all, really. We already know the new Spider-Man will be kind of like a John Hughes movie, with more emphasis on his high school experience than we’ve seen in films past, so maybe “Homecoming” just refers to the homecoming dance or something like that.”
All of this is conjecture at this point. We don’t know anything about Spider-Man: Homecoming just yet. It’s still early in development and it could all change between now and when it’s due in theaters next summer. As we can see from the logo, it’s playful. Some might suggest that it’s cheesy. Either way, it evokes a feeling of youth and silliness. Perhaps the film itself will follow suit.
