X-Men: Apocalypse Trailer: There Are Great Actors Beneath the Rubble

X-Men-Apocalypse-Crawl

Up until today, X-Men: Apocalypse has looked like a real disaster. A mess of literal apocalyptic action involving so much CG that it’s like a bad Entertainment Weekly cover come to life. Starting today, it still looks not-too-great, but the latest trailer does seem intent on wooing those of us who appreciate the good parts of the X-Men franchise.

Watch it here:

We’re meant to remember there are great actors here occasionally getting to do more than just wave their arms about in support of whatever the effects team throws our way.

Take as exhibit A the second shot of this new trailer, following a serene overhead landscape view of the X-Mansion:

Exhibit B is the third shot in the trailer:

X-Men-Apocalypse-McAvoy

And here’s exhibit C, shot number four:

X-Men-Apocalypse-Lawrence

That introduction to the Oscar nominee, the Golden Globe nominee and the Oscar winner appearing to do some actual acting is quite a different opener than the first trailer (labeled by Fox as a teaser) and Super Bowl spot had. With the former it was a montage of apocalyptic disaster scenes. The latter started off with multiple nuclear missiles being launched.

But here’s the most important piece of evidence of all:

X-Men-Apocalypse-Isaac

That’s right, people, Oscar Isaac will be seen in his normal, non-purple-faced form. Probably for just a few minutes, but still. There’s your boyfriend, Internet. There’s your god.

Of course, then we’re quickly back to seeing him this way:

And Michael Fassbender is like:

And the literal apocalypse staples of the modern superhero movie return to appease the wider audience that doesn’t really care if any of these actors has done Shakespeare recently or not:

But hey, they brought Quicksilver back, and man these people sure do look the same for it being another decade already. At least with someone like Quicksilver it could be explained through some sort of slowing of his aging or something.

And we’re not going to lie: Olivia Munn as Psylocke is going to be pretty badass in this movie. Just look:

Also, this Havok scene looks cool, too:

Anyway, do you guys remember those three-color projection TVs? They were both the coolest and the worst. This movie is going to be so much fun for those of us who grew up in the ’80s.
