As the title above suggests, Disney and Lucasfilm will be screening Star Wars: The Force Awakens at the upcoming South by Southwest (SXSW) Film Festival. Sort of.
The announcement was made this morning that Walt Disney Home Video will be debuting Secrets of The Force Awakens: A Cinematic Journey, the feature-length documentary about the making of the highest grossing domestic release of all-time. The documentary will also be featured on the DVD release of The Force Awakens, which hits store shelves on April 5, as well as the digital release due out on April 1.
It’s not a rare thing for SXSW to debut documentaries. They have whole categories for that. But documentaries that are basically supplemental material for a DVD release is a different sort of thing. It feels like kowtowing to the most populist, mainstream crowd to drive more interest in a festival that is already overcrowded. To some, it might not feel in-line with the spirit of SXSW. Then again, this is Star Wars and even cynics such as yours truly will show up on Monday, March 14 to get an early look at the story behind The Force Awakens.
You win again, Star Wars.
