Suicide Squad Trailer Proves That Nothing Really Matters

Suicide Squad: Harley Quinn

After a night of watching The Flash return to television (in fine form) and having to witness Kevin Smith try not to excitement-vomit all over Geoff Johns during the DC Films television special, Warner Bros. and DC Films finally debuted a new trailer for Suicide Squad.

David Ayer’s film will, as the trailer tells us, bring together the “worst heroes ever.” But not worst in the sense that they are incompetent. Worst in the sense that they are all really bad people. Will Smith plays Deadshot, a man who just likes killing. Jai Courtney plays Captain Boomerang, a man who really likes drinking and punching. Cara Delevingne is Enchantress, who is possessed. Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje is Killer Croc, who literally eats people. And El Diablo, played by Jay Hernandez, lights people on fire.

They are all bad people.

You get the idea. Easily the most fun of the group — someone who ends up front and center of this trailer — is Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn. If the film has anything going for it, it’s her presence alongside Jared Leto’s seemingly vicious portrayal of The Joker. The trailer gives us more of both. While Batman v Superman continues to look like a dour-fest, Suicide Squad at least has a sense of humor. It would have to, otherwise it’s just a bunch of terrible people doing terrible things. If Ayer’s film is to succeed, we’re going to need to root for someone.

Watch the new trailer for yourself:

Its abuse of a great Queen song aside, this still looks like fun. Exactly what the hell they are fighting remains a mystery, but it appears to have… tentacles? Between this and the video game cutscene version of Doomsday in the Batman v Superman trailer, it appears as if DC Films has eschewed the grounded, gritty reality that was so successful in Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy (an aesthetic that spilled over into Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel). It’s crazy party time in the DC Cinematic Universe. And that’s probably not the worst thing, either.

Suicide Squad hits theaters on August 5th.
